SEMANTICS: METAPHOR

3:01:00 PM

ASSALAMUALAIKUM WR.WB

Hello readers, In this opportunity  i would like to share a good material in Semantic Area, namely METAPHOR.
Here, you will see the definition, basic, types, more examples and purpose&function of Metaphor. Come on guys............

 METAPHOR

DEFINITION
A Metaphor is figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that is not literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.
Metaphors are the words used to fabricate someone or something with others. It is almost same with Simile. The difference is in Metaphors, we no longer use the word “like” or “as”.
A metaphor asserts a correlation or resemblance between two things that are otherwise unrelated. The English word “metaphor” originate from Greek metaphorá, which means “to transfer” or “to carry over”. Indeed, a metaphor transfer meaning from one subject on to another so that the target subject can be understood in a new way.
Metaphors help us to express our understanding of the world around us. They add color, vivid imagery and perhaps  emotion to a sentence.
Here the basics:
A metaphors states that one thing is another thing
It equates those two things not because they actually are the same, but for the sake of comparison or symbolism
If you take metaphors literally, it will probably sound very strange
Metaphors are used in poetry, literature and anytime someone wants to add some color to their language

TYPES OF METAPHORS
In literature, there are many other types of metaphors, namely:

1. Implied Metaphor is a type of metaphor that compares two unlike things, but it does so without mentioning one of them.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Jordan got his courtship cues from the peacock. In a room full of ladies, Jordan simply fans his feathers

2. Sustained / Extended Metaphor is carried through  multiple sentences or develop over a longer section of the text, a sustained metaphor can be a powerful literary device that provides strong, vivid imagery in the readers mind.
This kind of metaphor is often found in songs and poetry.
FOR EXAMPLE:

JAQUES: All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being  seven ages.
(As you like it by William Shakespeare

3. Dead Metaphor is traditionally defined as a figure of speech that has lost its force and imaginative effectiveness through frequent use. Dead metaphor have a conventional meaning that differs from the original.
Also known as a frozen metaphor or a historical metaphor.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Time is running out
Raining cats and dogs
Heart of gold

MORE EXAMPLES OF METAPHOR:
  • My brother was boiling mad. (This implies he was too angry.)
  • The assignment was a breeze. (This implies that the assignment was not difficult.)
  • It is going to be clear skies from now on. (This implies that clear skies are not a threat and life is going to be without hardships)
  • The skies of his future began to darken. (Darkness is a threat; therefore, this implies that the coming times are going to be hard for him.)
  • Her voice is music to his ears. (This implies that her voice makes him feel happy)
  • A heart of stone
  • You are the sun in my sky
  • You are the light in my life
  • Drowning in the sea
  • Jumping for joy
  • Apple of my eye
  • Kicked the bucket
  • The sky was dark and angry
  • She gave me an icy lock
  • Life is a long scary roller coaster
  • And others

PURPOSE AND FUNCTION
One purpose of a metaphor is to give information briefly. Metaphors show what the author is communicating instead of telling with a list of adjectives and adverbs.
From the above arguments, explanations and examples, we can easily infer the function of metaphors; both in our daily lives and in a piece of literature. Using appropriate metaphors appeals directly to the senses of listeners or readers, sharpening their imaginations to comprehend what is being communicated to them. Moreover, it gives a life-like quality to our conversations and to the characters of the fiction or poetry. Metaphors are also ways of thinking, offering the listeners and the readers fresh ways of examining ideas and viewing the world.

A Review by ADE GUSTIA PUTRI

Title     : WHAT IS SEMANTICS?
Page   : 11
Posted by JULIA LOPEZ at academia.edu

This article give us the material of Semantics in general, this following are some important things in the Julia’s post.

Semantics is the study of meaning. It is a wide subject within the general study of language. An understanding of semantics is essential to the study of language acquisition and of language change. It is important for understanding language in social contexts, as these are likely to affect meaning, and for understanding varieties of English and effects of style. It is thus one of the most fundamental concepts in linguistics.
The study of semantics includes the study of how meaning is constructed, interpreted, clarified, obscured, illustrated, simplified negotiated, contradicted and paraphrased.
Some important areas of semantic theory or related subjects include these:
  • Symbol and referent
  • Conceptions of meaning
  • Words and lexemes
  • Denotation, connotation, implication
  • Pragmatics
  • Ambiguity
  • Metaphor, simile and symbol
  • Semantic fields
  • Synonym, antonym and hyponym
  • Collocation, fixed expression and idiom
  • Semantic change and etymology
  • Polysemy
  • Homonymy, homophones and homographs
  • Lexicology and lexicography
  • Thesauruses, libraries and Web portals
  • Epistemology
  • Colour
In this article, we will find explanations below of how each of these relates to the theoretical study of semantics.

Review….
WHAT IS SEMANTICS? is an article or journal was posted by Julia Lopez at academia.edu and there are 11 pages on one file. This article is great for students who are studying Semantics Course for the first time. It tells us about how meaning is obtainable, (how language users acquire a sense of meaning, as speakers and writers, listeners and readers), and also how meanings alter over time. Not only that, this article give us explanation of important area in semantics along with more examples.
The writer provides the explanation of semantics in easily and clearly English language. We can understand it quickly and know about WHAT IS SEMANTICS, Some important part of semantics, etc.
But, Ms.Lopez’s Post too long. There are theories that I still confused in some part of her writing although I try read more. Because, the writer so many give different watermark such as red and maroon colour in many part of words. Also, there is discrepancy which the sub-title writings is smaller than the contents.
Overall, this journal has many advantages for the readers, we just need to read other book/article/journal to support our knowledges.
Nothing is perfect! Fighting!

Infrastructure is a major problem and also add with the poverty problem. In addition, spatial plans of RT RW in Riau Province is unfinished thus inhibiting investment in this MEA era. In the term of public services, Riau still far less than Jakarta and Surabaya even though, geographically Riau is closer with MEA countries, especially Singapore and Malaysia.
